Darth's Build-O-Team, 2005 Edition

For those of you unfamiliar with the Build-O-Team, it is a process in which I take the past recruiting class and the upcoming class to build a two-deep depth chart. The exercise is intended to show what areas are doing well recruiting-wise and what areas could use a little more attention. It is not a depth chart for next year. It is only an exercise to show what recruiting needs may yet exist. I have made no value judgments where athletes fit on the depth chart, instead listing them only by year. If an athlete is listed at multiple positions I will move them to the position of most need. That is not an indication of where the coaches intend for them to play.

QUARTERBACK (HAVE: 4, NEED: 2, NET: +2)
Jordan Adams, QB 6'3", 195, n/a
Beau Davis, QB 6'4", 185, 4.65
Joe Ganz, QB 6'3", 190, 4.7
Harrison Beck, QB 6'2", 205, 4.7
(NOTE: Adams is JUCO player, Ganz may change positions, Beck is only 2005 recruit)

RUNNING BACK (HAVE: 1, NEED: 2, NET: -1)
Brandon Jackson, RB 6'0", 220, 4.43

RECEIVER (HAVE: 6, NEED: 6, NET: even)
Marque McCray, WR 5'9", 190, 4.4
Shamus McKoy, WR 6'1", 205, 4.5
Terrence Nunn, WR 6'0", 185, 4.4
Santino Panico, ATH 6'0", 200, 4.5
Nathan Swift, WR 6'3", 185, 4.5
Wallace Franklin, WR 6'2", 165, 4.4
(NOTE: WR is position of extreme need due to change in offensive style, so may yet take 1-2 more)

TIGHT END (HAVE: 2, NEED: 4, NET: -2)
Clayton Sievers, TE 6'4", 230, 4.75
David Harvey, TE 6'4", 230, 4.9
(NOTE: I cheated a little bit, placing two TE on the field at a time, but TE is such a critical position for the WCO and after Herian they have very little. Need to ramp up talent level at TE significantly)

OFFENSIVE LINE (HAVE: 8, NEED: 10, NET: -2)
Cornelius Thomas, OL 6'6", 300, n/a
Andy Christensen, OL 6'3", 275, 5.0
Mike Huff, OL 6'5", 305, 5.2
Lydon Murtha, OL 6'8", 305, 5.0
Danny Muy, OL 6'4", 270, 5.1
Jacob Hickman, OL 6'4", 255, 5.0
Rodney Picou, OL 6'4", 295, 5.4
Craig Roark, OL 6'3", 290, 5.3
(NOTE: Corn is a JUCO transfer, OL depth is a concern, could easily take more than two additional OL in this class, including more JUCO players if needed)

DEFENSIVE LINE (HAVE: none, NEED: 4, NET: -4)
(NOTE: If any single position stands out with a glaring shortcoming, it is defensive line. Fortunately our best recruiter also happens to be the DL coach. They need to sign a couple of great prospects here to end the long drought on the D-line)

DEFENSIVE ENDS (HAVE: 2, NEED: 4, NET: -2)
Adam Blankenship, DE 6'3", 230, 4.7
Ty Steinkuhler, RE 6'3", 235, 5.1

LINEBACKERS (HAVE: 4, NEED: 6, NET: -2)
Lance Brandenburgh, LB 6'1", 220, 4.6
Michael Keenan, LB 6'2", 220, 4.6
Nick Covey, LB 6'3", 216, 4.6
Phillip Dillard, LB 6'2", 240, 4.5

DEFENSIVE BACKS (HAVE: 3, NEED: 8, NET: -5)
Courtney Grixby, DB 5'9", 165, 4.35
Zackary Bowman, DB 6'2", 200, 4.3
Calvin Mickens, DB 6'1", 180, 4.3
(NOTE: Bowman may play WR, but they need help desperately in the defensive backfield. They need both corners and safeties, including at least one corner who can play immediately)

CONCLUSION: The offense is in good shape, but the defense is in big trouble. To build for the future they need a significant boost in recruiting numbers at several different positions. Next year isn't the big problem, it is the years after that. LeKevin Smith, Titus Adams, Barrett Ruud, the Bullocks twins, and Fabian Washington will be leaving us soon. They need some guys who can come in and keep the Blackshirt tradition going.
